- (18 Nov. 2008) -- Astronaut Heidemarie Stefanyshyn-Piper participates in the mission's first spacewalk as construction and maintenance continue on the ISS. During the six-hour, 52-minute spacewalk, Piper and astronaut Steve Bowen worked to clean and lubricate parts of the ISS, as well as removed some insulation blankets from the common berthing mechanism on the Kibo laboratory.

During the six-hour, 57-minute spacewalk, Bowen and astronaut Heidi Piper focused their efforts on the continued cleaning of the station's starboard solar alpha rotary joint, SARJ's, which help the joint to rotate and lock into place. Earth's horizon and the blackness of space provide the backdrop for the scene.
